What Did You Say? (A Simple Reminder)
Prov. 15:1, 18:6-8, 20-21 (NLT)
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”, how many times have you either said or heard someone make this statement? I am sure many times. There is a problem with this statement though…..our words can, will and do affect others. The book of Proverbs is full of times where we are given instructions to watch our words, to choose our words carefully. In Proverbs 15:1, it says “a gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.” So many times it is not what you say but how you say it that truly makes the difference.
Not only should you consider the words you use towards others but also what you say about yourself! Your words affect not only others, but they affect your life as well. When you begin to say things such as “I can’t do this”, “I am no good at …” these words will begin to shape your life. They will begin to cause you to become exactly what you have spoken over yourself.
Words are very powerful. Words are what God used in the creation of all you see. In Genesis, chapter One, He said, “let there be….” and “there was….” You and I are made in His image and in His likeness; therefore, our words are also powerful and create a life and atmosphere of peace and joy or a life and atmosphere of strife and anger. So I challenge you to stop and think before you speak, choose your words carefully for they are powerful.
